ESTATE HISTORY

Château Montrose appears in history during the 19th century thanks to Théodore Dumoulin. Château Montrose takes its name from the color of the heather that once covered the domain , whose pretty colour of wine lees is well known. This “young” estate is just a few years old in the 1855 classification and benefits from the most beautiful vineyard of the appellation. After the death of Théodore Dumoulin, the estate is sold and acquired by Mr. Dollfus. Nothing is too good for the Château Montrose, this visionary modifies the Castle, builds outbuildings, increases the technical potential. The castle looks like a real little village. At the end of the 19th century, the property joined the Charmolue family for more than 3 generations. In 2006, the Château was bought by Martin and Olivier Bouygues. The Bouygues brothers launched a vast renovation program for the site with environmental objectives.

TERROIR

Surface: 95-hectare (234-acres)
The Montrose terroir corresponds to what geologists call “elite cores”. Over millions of years, a complex process of geological layering resulted in the creation of outcrops, ideal for making fine wines and ensuring natural drainage towards the estuary.
The soil on these terraces consists of gravel mixed with sand on the surface over a clay-rich subsoil in which natural reserves form at depth, providing the vines with the water they need.

VITICULTURE

Sustainable farming. The work in the vineyard is respectful of the environment.

WINEMAKING

Alcoholic fermentations takes place in stainless steel tanks, and lasts about twenty days. Several pumping over are done daily, in order to help the exchange of  seeds / juice. Matured for 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels.

TASTING & FOOD PAIRINGS

The wine is a deep, dazzling purple. Initially rather closed, the nose opens with airing to reveal elegant fresh fruit, blackcurrant bud and eucalyptus aromas. A fresh, clean attack leads into a full, powerful and silky mid-palate, building to an incredibly long finish on notes of brioche and liquorice. An intense and stylish vintage to come back to in a few years’ time.
Château Montrose can be best when served with roasted, braised or grilled meats like steak, veal, pork, beef, game, Asian dishes, hearty fish courses like tuna, pasta and cheeses.
