Bâtard Montrachet

2020

Region: Beaune, Burgundy

ESTATE HISTORY

Established in Puligny-Montrachet since 1859, Domaine Jean Chartron has the privilege of cultivating some of the most prestigious parcels in Burgundy.

TERROIR

The Bâtard-Montrachet from Jean Chartron originates from a world-class plot located at the border of Puligny and Chassagne. The terroir is defined by deep, brown limestone soils with a higher clay content than the higher slopes. This specific composition creates the wine’s legendary power and density.

Facing east-southeast, the vines captured the intense sun of the 2020 vintage, resulting in a wine of immense concentration. It balances massive structure and ripe fruit with a persistent mineral salinity, typical of the estate’s focus on elegance and precision. It is a rich, opulent Chardonnay designed for significant aging.

VITICULTURE

Chartron utilizes organic and biodynamic practices focused on low yields and hand-harvesting. Soil is plowed to force deep rooting into the limestone, while careful canopy management in 2020 protected the fruit from heat, ensuring the wine maintained its structural acidity.

WINEMAKING

Jean Chartron employs a traditional yet precise approach, using long fermentation and aging in oak barrels (around 40% new) for 12 to 15 months. The process emphasizes minimal intervention and fine lees contact to enhance texture without masking the terroir. In 2020, the focus was on preserving freshness to balance the vintage’s natural ripeness and power.

TASTING AND FOOD PAIRINGS

This 2020 Grand Cru is powerful and opulent, blending ripe orchard fruit and citrus with a rich, buttery texture. It maintains a sharp mineral focus and a long, saline finish, balancing its solar intensity with classic elegance.

91–93 points-Wine Advocate (William Kelley)

Critics noted its energy and drive, highlighting a mix of white fruit and mineral tension despite the warmth of the vintage. Most suggest a drinking window that opens around 2024–2026 and extends well into the late 2030s or early 2040s.

This Grand Cru pairs beautifully with rich dishes such as lobster thermidor, seared scallops, or roasted poultry with morel mushrooms. It also complements nutty, aged cheeses like Comté.
